How to Recycle at Williams

Paper
  • Plain and colored office paper
  • Shiny paper
  • Post-It notes, envelopes
  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • Chipboard (cereal boxes, Kleenex boxes, etc.)
In public areas: Place these in the red recycling containers marked "paper."

In classrooms and offices: Place in the small brownish containers (smaller than trash containers).

In dorms: Bring to the trash/recycling room in your dorm.

Plastic, Glass, and Metal
  • Drink bottles (plastic and glass)
  • Yogurt containers (clean)
  • Clear plastic take out food containers (clean)
  • Laundry detergent bottles
  • Aluminum cans
  • Foil lined or aseptic Juice/Milk containers
In public areas: Place these in the green containers marked "plastic glass cans."

In classrooms: In the appropriately labeled small brownish container near the trash containers.

In offices: Offices do not have containers for these items, so please take them to the nearest public recycling station in your building.

In dorms: Bring to the trash/recycling room in your dorm.

Cardboard
  • Corrugated Cardboard
Flatten and stack next to recycling containers in public areas and dorm rooms.
Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs
CFLs contain small amounts of mercury and must be treated as a hazardous waste. Place these in a labeled container and write the date that you started accumulating the bulbs. Contact the Facilities Service desk for pick up at 597-2486.
Electronic Equipment
  • Computers
  • Laptops
  • Monitors, TVs
  • Printers
  • Thermostats
These items can contain lead or mercury and cannot be disposed of in the trash. Contact the Facilities Service desk at 597-2486 to arrange for pick up.
Batteries (all types)
9 volt batteries must be placed in plastic bags provided at the battery recycling location. Terminals of lithium ion batteries must be taped.

  • Paresky – outside of mailroom
  • Hopkins Hall – Zilkha Center on 1st floor
  • Facilities – Stockroom
Clothing
Clean and gently used clothing can be recycled in Paresky in the built in recycling containers located near the Park St. entrance. Clothing will be donated to Greylock ABC.
Non Recycleable Items
  • Photographs
  • Staples
  • Paper Towels, Napkins
  • Pizza boxes
  • Styrofoam
  • Plastic bags
These should go in trash containers. Where possible reduce the amount you use.
