Winter Study and Travel

The Winter Study Trip, required of all first-year students in the Program, is unique among graduate art history programs. Emphasis falls on seeing works of art in the original, located either in museums or in situ. Students travel as a group for approximately three weeks, accompanied by the Program Director or other faculty.  The Program covers most expenses except lunch, dinner, and admission to museums.

In recent years the trip itinerary has included the United Kingdom (London, Edinburgh, Glasgow), France (Paris, Chantilly, Lille, Strasbourg), Belgium and the Netherlands (Antwerp, Bruges, Ghent and Amsterdam, Haarlem, The Hague), Spain (Madrid), Germany (Berlin, Colmar, Cologne, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Leipzig, Munich, Nuremberg), Austria (Vienna), the Czech Republic (Prague), Italy (Florence, Mantua, Rome, Venice, and Vicenza), Switzerland (Basel), and Turkey (Istanbul). In 2008 students traveled to Paris, Rome, and Florence; in 2009 to Russia, including St. Petersburg and Moscow, as well as to Helsinki, Finland.
