Preparation for dental school turns out to be very similar to preparation for medical school. The science prerequisites are identical, the decision-making process is nearly the same, and the application process runs parallel to medical school admissions. The ADEA has many useful links for the potential dental student. Predental students take the DAT, not the MCAT. A number of local dentists and oral surgeons participate in the medical apprenticeship program, so it is easy to arrange opportunities to observe.
Plan on meeting with the advisor early in your college career to discuss specific steps. The office has numerous resources, including copies of The Official Guide to Dental Schools, an ADEA publication that details all of the schools and their requirements.
Applications to dental school are generally submitted early in the fall, one year before intended matriculation. Most schools accept applications through AADSAS, an online common application service provided by the American Dental Education Association.
