Freshman Year

Summer One: Real World Exploration!

It is often difficult for first-year students to compete for the national, name-brand internships. Consider the competition with your upperclassmen. Consider this a building year in which you can have fun, earn $$, or take summer school classes while testing your interests through a part-time, volunteer internship close to home. It’s often possible to cobble together two activities, one paid, one volunteer, which will result in both a profitable and rewarding summer. The important thing is to get some kind of career related experience.

If you are intent upon being away from home and in a challenging, full-time, career-related experience, you need to start early – in the fall semester – putting together a plan. Winter Study period is often a good time to ramp up your search and have something in hand by early February. It would be wise to meet with your career counselor to create a plan for this type of search.
