Williams opens up a world of opportunities with more than 150 study-away options. Students can structure their own programs with help from the College's study-away dean, and most departments grant credit for relevant course work taken through study away. Because Williams' curricular requirements are few, even double majors and science majors find it possible to work international study into their schedules. With approved programs in over 60 countries — including Germany, France, China, India, and Australia — and a completely portable financial aid policy (you can take it with you), we make sure that every student can enjoy the cross-cultural benefits of study away.
On its own, Williams offers programs in Oxford, England; Mystic, Connecticut; New York City; and Cape Town, South Africa. The Williams-Oxford Programme enables our juniors to take part in a year in the life of one of the world's great universities — taking one seminar on contemporary British culture with a Williams professor and tutorials with Oxford faculty members. In the Williams-Mystic Program in American Maritime Studies, students spend a semester at Connecticut's Mystic Seaport Maritime Museum studying maritime history, literature, oceanography, and marine ecology, taking a multidisciplinary seminar. The Williams in New York Program offers a semester of urban studies, with a focus on fieldwork and experiential education.
The newly-created Williams in Africa Program will launch in the Fall in 2007, offering not only a study away opportunity, but also internships and postgraduate fellowships. The program will work closely with alumni who work in HIV/AIDS awareness and other non government organizations.
Williams students are also able to travel during Winter Study, either as part of a travel class led by Williams faculty, or independently as part of a self-designed project. Likewise, many Williams students spend the summer traveling and studying, largely supported by travel fellowships and grants awarded by the dean's office.
