Behind the Scenes of Grey’s Anatomy
Susan Vaill ’94, Film Editor, Grey’s Anatomy.
Since its launch in 2005, Grey’s Anatomy has been at the top of the Nielsen ratings, routinely drawing an audience of 15 million viewers. Using stills and clips, Susan will reveal how an episode of dramatic television is brought from the script to screen, focusing on how the editor shapes the story using the tools of performance, music, and sound design. She has been involved in Grey’s Anatomy since its pilot episode, and also helped to de’elop the signature musical sound of the series. “Into You Like A Train,” her first episode as an editor, received nominations from the Directors’ Guild, Writers' Guild, and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Previously Susan was an assistant editor for numerous television and film projects, including The Last Samurai. She received an MFA in film production from the University of Southern California, where she wrote and directed the award-winning short film Valette.
