ARTH 211(F) Roman Art (Same as Classics 211)
This course focuses on the artistic traditions of the Romans from the Republic to the age of Constantine. Architecture, sculpted portraits, and reliefs, wall paintings, mosaics, gems, and
coins will be examined in their historical and social contexts. Topics include the relationship
between art and politics; patronage; gender; and the development of the city of Rome from
a humble village on the Palatine Hill to a thriving metropolis and grand imperial capital.
The history of archaeology in Italy and its impact on our present-day understanding of the
Roman world will be studied as well.
Format: lecture. Requirements: 2 one-hour exams; final exam; 5- to 7-page paper.
No prerequisites. Enrollment limit: 20 (expected:15). Preference given to Art majors. This
course satisfies the Pre-1800 and Pre-1400 requirements.
